8 Plex plugins you need

While Plex is great on its own, the real fun comes from customizing your experience with plugins, turning the platform into your personal streaming DeLorean. It will also benefit anyone who uses your Plex library, such as installing better search engines or a request system.

1. WebTools-NG

WebTools-NG gives you the power not only to manage your plugins but also to gain more access through an unofficial app store (UAS). Additionally, WebTools-NG also acts as a hub to maintain Plex's backend, such as servers and content. It even lets you access specific media libraries, which is handy if you have a music collection on Plex separate from movies and TV shows.

2. Bazarr

Whenever you want to add subtitles to your content, Bazarr does all the heavy lifting. It's especially convenient if you watch foreign movies or prefer subtitled cartoons to dubbed movies. You just need to specify the language you want and Bazarr will do the rest!

3. Tdarr

Can you imagine how long it would take to manually check hundreds of media items? It's tiring when your server starts to grow. Tdarr is like your personal Plex doctor, diagnosing transcoding problems and noting damaged files with pretty good accuracy. In other words, it does most of the tedious work for you.

More importantly, Tdarr can save you money by re-encoding files into something easier to store. For example, H.264 is typically smaller than MP4. It even goes out of its way to clean up ineffective metadata, remove inaccurate subtitles, and update video standards. For example, H.264 will be upgraded to H.265 instead.

4. FileBot

One of the biggest problems you'll encounter as your library gets larger is organization, and you'll need an app like FileBot to organize your Plex library. It targets both titles and metadata, automatically grouping from multiple metadata sources for greater accuracy. In fact, it will be easier for users to find content. It will save you and your users a lot of trouble later.

5. Overseerr

Overseerr sounds super intimidating, but it's actually a request management system. While Tautulli can handle sending notifications to your connected users, this plugin does the opposite. People with access to your Plex library can submit requests for specific content using a really easy and intuitive request system, including preferred language and even quality.

6. Kometa

Like FileBot, Komta gives you more control over how your content is presented to users, but goes deeper into surface-level metadata and titles. It populates your Plex Media Server with a host of organizational tools, such as categorizing content into specific movie ratings, languages, years, and even actors. Additionally, there are included scripts you can install to help clean up the user interface, like ImageMaid, which helps remove duplicate posters.

7. Export Tools

Export Tools is like asking the waiter what's on the menu. If someone asks to see your Plex library, instead of giving them immediate access, you can share a link with them. It will open in their browser and they can check it out without needing an account.

8. Tautulli

Think of Tautulli as your own Plex server. On one hand, you can access user data – what, when, and how people use content. On the other hand, the plugin also gives you the ability to limit usage. If you notice too many people streaming in 4K, limit it to 1080p.

However, often you will use newsletters a lot. If you use a request management system, like Overseerr (also a must-have plugin), you can use Tautulli to notify users, letting them know there's new content. It's also handy to let everyone know before the server goes down for maintenance.

All of these plugins have a single goal: Turn Plex from a simple platform into a well-organized powerhouse for you and your viewers. Once you install these plugins, you won't be able to imagine using Plex without them.
