On Windows 10 you can easily find a page dedicated to managing background applications. However, on Windows 11 this will be a bit more difficult. However, Windows 11 still allows you to turn off background applications. You can set up for each application or for all applications, set up for one user and all users on the computer.
Note: What TipsMake.com guides you in this article only works with apps you install from the Microsoft Store. All apps you download from other sources will not have settings to run in the background. Additionally, preventing apps from running in the background doesn't mean you can't use them. You can still run these apps normally.
There are a few ways for you to turn off background applications on Windows 11. Here are the details:
Turn off background apps in Settings
1. Open Settings in Windows 11. You can use keyboard shortcuts Win + I to open quickly or use other methods.
2. Click Apps then continue to click Apps & features.
3. Find the app you want to turn off running in the background. Click on the 3 dots and select Advanced options.
4. Find the section Background apps permissions and select the mode you want. By default Windows 11 will be set to mode Power optimized. It allows Windows to self-manage how an application operates in the background. For example, the system will automatically turn off all background applications if you turn on battery saving mode.
5. Select mode Never to prevent the app from running in the background. However, if after selecting Never If the application crashes, does not send notifications, or does not update data, you should switch back to its settings Power optimized or Always.
6. Repeat the above operation with other applications.
Turn off background apps via Power & battery settings
The Power & battery page in Windows 11 Settings provides data about the battery usage of installed applications. This is really useful if you want to kill background apps based on battery usage to save power.
Here's how to do it.
1. Press Win + I to open the Settings page.
2. In tabs Systemscroll down and click Power & battery.
3. Scroll down to the section Battery and click Battery usage.

4. Click the drop-down menu Battery levels and choose Last 7 days. Windows will load all applications that have used battery power in the past 7 days.

5. To change background app permissions, click the three-dot menu next to the app name and select Manage background productivity. This option is only available for Microsoft Store apps.
6. Click the drop-down menu (Power optimized) in section Background apps permissions and choose Never. This will disable the app from running in the background. If you set it to Alwaysthe app will continuously run in the background regardless of your power status.
7. Repeat the steps for all apps that may drain battery or affect system performance.
In Windows 11 Settings there is no button for you to turn off all background applications at once. Therefore, we will continue to the next section, using the Registry.
Turn off all background applications on Windows 11 using Registry
1. You press Win + R to open Run then type regedit and press Enter.
2. Access the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\BackgroundAccessApplications
3. In the right window, edit or create a DWORD (32-bit) Value named GlobalUserDisabled.
4. Set 1 into the box Value data to stop all apps from running in the background on Windows 11.
5. Restart the device to apply changes.
To undo the changes, you simply need to adjust the value of GlobalUserDisabled wall 0 that's it.
Use pre-made REG files
If you don't want to waste time editing the Registry, you can download the REG file that TipsMake.com has created.
1. Download the ZIP archive of the pre-made REG file.
2. Unzip to any folder.
3. Double-click the file Tatappchayngam.reg to turn off all apps running in the background.
4. Confirm action then restart the computer.
You can undo changes by double-clicking the file Batapchayngam.reg in the ZIP file you just downloaded.
Turn off apps running in the background on Windows 11 for all users using Group Policy
Besides the Registry, you can use Group Policy to turn off apps running in the background on Windows 11 for all users on a computer. For Windows 11 Home that cannot open Group Policy, we will also provide a pre-edited REG file.
1. Open Local Group Policy Editor by pressing Win + R then type gpedit.msc then press Enter.
2. Navigate to the folder: Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\App Privacy
3. On the right pane, find and click Let Windows apps run in the background and choose Enabled.
4. In the menu Default for all appsselect Force Deny. Press Apply and OK.
So you have turned off background apps for all users on a computer running Windows 11.
As mentioned, Windows 11 Home does not allow you to use Local Group Policy Editor, so you must use the Registry to turn off apps running in the background for all users.
Turn off apps running in the background on Windows 11 for all users using Registry
1. You press Win + R to open Run then type regedit and press Enter.
2. Access the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AppPrivacy
If not found AppPrivacy You can create a new one by right clicking Windows then select New > Key.
3. Once available AppPrivacyclick on the box on the right to create one DWORD (32-bit) Value has a name LetAppsRunInBackground and set the value as 2.
4. Restart the computer.
