Undervolt instructions reduce CPU temperature

The more work you do on your computer, the more your CPU (processor) heats up, especially during heavy gaming or video editing. Your CPU is more likely to overheat when the ventilation system is poor or the thermal paste on the chip has worn off. However, there is a process that can help you reduce processor temperature called “undervolting”.

This process is an effective way to reduce computer heat using software. This article will use Throttlestop to cool the CPU.

What is the Undervolting process?

Before going into specific instructions, we need to know a few things about this process. Although undervolting does not damage the CPU, overvolting can make the system unstable (although this process can be easily reversed). On the other hand, overvolting can damage the CPU if overused, but if used carefully, you can overclock the CPU to higher speeds.

Undervolting simply reduces the amount of power/voltage directly entering the CPU. The more electricity applied to the CPU, the higher the temperature; and conversely, the less electricity, the lower the temperature. Another possibility of undervolting is that it can extend the laptop's battery life. And undervolting does not affect performance even when you do intense activities like gaming.

Undervolute CPU using Ryzen Master

1. In Ryzen Master, you can do this by selecting Curve Optimizer in the configuration section on the left, then set Control Mode wall Default. Below that, Curve Optimizer Control will be Included when turned on Auto Offset. You can leave the settings as they are. Note that Curve Optimizer is only available for AMD 5000 series processors and above.

2. Select Curve Optimizer or Per Core next to Curve Optimizer Mode. The example will proceed with All Cores for automatic optimization. Click Start Optimizing to the right of the row and click OK to confirm the reminder.

3. Depending on your CPU core and system configuration, the automatic optimization will take about 30 to 60 minutes and may reboot your system a few times, then display the offset value entire core in section CO All Core Value.

4. Now, leave the section Difference Offset Value and click Apply to use Curve Optimizer. Run the Cinebench test to compare your scores and maximum temperatures with the default settings.

Eco-Mode with Ryzen Master

Eco-Mode runs your CPU at lower power conditions to reduce temperatures in situations where you don't even need stock performance.

Open any profile on the left, enable Eco-Mode in Control Mode and click Apply. Ryzen Master will reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

You will find the option Reset at the bottom left of the Ryzen Master window to revert your CPU to factory settings. Besides, Basic View shows you some basic CPU monitoring values, and you can do some quick overclocking with the options on the right.

Undervolt using BIOS

You can also undervolt your CPU in the BIOS.

1. Revert all settings to default from your previous overclock, set ”Precision Boost Overdrive” wall “Advanced” and “PBO Limits” wall “Disable”.

Normally, you need to go into the BIOS to cool down the CPU. This means you need to restart the laptop every time you want to adjust the voltage values.

Luckily, thanks to this free software called Intel XTU, you can change the values ​​without rebooting. This means you can spend more time adjusting values ​​and less time staring at your PC's BIOS screen.

To get started with Intel XTU:

1. Download and install Intel Extreme Tuning Utility on Windows computer.

2. Launch the program and find the slider Core Voltage Offset. Now drag the slider a little to the left. You will notice that the voltage value is reduced. Getting started with Core Voltage Offset (core voltage offset) -0.050Vthen click Apply to save changes.

Try playing the game and see if you get any crashes or blue screens. If not, you can reduce the Voltage Offset -0.100V and try again. Slowly continue to reduce the voltage until the laptop freezes, then return to the previous voltage value at which the laptop can operate stably.

Immediately after applying the new voltage settings, you will notice a decrease in the CPU temperature value in the graph. There is no perfect Core Voltage Offset value for everyone because it varies from laptop to laptop. You will need to do a trial run to find the ideal values ​​for your machine. However, -0.050V is a safe starting point for most laptops.

One important thing to note is that Intel XTU only works with Intel processors. If you have a gaming laptop with a Ryzen CPU, you can use AMD's Ryzen Master software to achieve similar results.

Undervolt CPU using Throttlestop

Throttlestop features

Throttlestop is a multi-purpose tool. Let's look at the checkboxes on the main Throttlestop screen.

The article will only look at those boxes that are relevant to modern CPUs, as some of them are more related to features for older PCs. Here are the features you should look for:

Disable Turbo: This setting will ensure that no cores on the CPU run faster than their base clock speed. If you have a base clock speed of 2.6GHz with boost up to 3GHz, checking this box will ensure that it stays in the 2.6GHz zone instead of boosting.

BD Prochot: A safety feature that regulates the CPU when things inside the laptop get too hot. Generally, throttling will kick in when the CPU reaches 100°C, but with this box ticked, the CPU will throttle even if the GPU is just barely reaching this level. It's a handy safety measure worth having in extremely rare cases.

Speed ​​Shift: On recent CPUs (2016 onwards), Intel has released this feature, which helps the CPU respond faster to changes in clock speed set by software. If this option appears in Throttlestop, you should turn it on.

SpeedStep: If your CPU is older than the Intel Skylake (2015) generation, then Speedstep does the same job as Speed ​​Shift. Enable this feature if you have an old CPU.

How to use Throttlestop

First, download and install Throttlestop, then open it.

You will see a series of numbers and options that can confuse you, but ignore these numbers, you only need to pay attention to the 4 round buttons on the top left. These buttons will help you change different profiles, each profile will have its own undervolt settings. You can create different profiles such as “Game” to use when playing games or “Performance” if you want.

So, with the profile selected, click the button FIVR in Throttlestop. In the new window, check the box Unlock Adjustable Voltage. Next, reduce the slider Offset Voltagein section Undervolting. You should reduce it to -100mV.

Then, click “CPU Cache” in section “FIVR Control“, and set it to the same voltage level. It is important that the CPU Core and CPU Cache always have the same Voltage Offset.

Once you have completed the above steps, click “Apply” and continue to monitor system stability and CPU temperatures. You can monitor CPU temperature from Throttlestop's main window.

If your system is still stable (no blue screen appears), you can continue to reduce the CPU Cache and CPU Core voltage by -10mV to further reduce the CPU temperature. If you reach a point where the system freezes, restart the computer, open Throttlestop, and return to the previous Offset Voltage level where the system was still stable.

With different CPUs, the level of voltage applied is not the same. You need to experiment to find out your CPU limits. Once you have finished making adjustments, press “OK” in the FIVR console, then select “Turn On” in the main Throttlestop window.

By using this method, many people reduce the CPU temperature when playing games from nearly 90°C to 70-75°C. This is more effective when you adjust the temperature from within Windows. Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to continuously overclock?

Continuous overclocking of the CPU can shorten the life of the chip due to excessive and constant heat. This can also damage your CPU if you do not control the CPU temperature. But if you get more performance out of your workload without constantly hitting 85 to 90 degrees, you can continuously overclock without any problems. With Ryzen Master, you can always switch to default settings at any time (requiring a system reboot in some cases).

Do I need to leave Ryzen Master open?

Are not. However, shutting down or restarting the system will erase all the changes you made in Ryzen Master and you will need to reapply them or load the saved configuration.

Does Ryzen Master change BIOS?

Ryzen Master does not change BIOS settings. It only shows the CPU control options you already have in the BIOS on Windows environment. Restarting the system will erase any changes you made to Ryzen Master. However, it's still a good idea to keep your BIOS settings at default so as not to interfere with any settings you tweak in Ryzen Master.
