Why should you turn off your Windows laptop every day?

When leaving their laptop, many people just close the lid and go. Although it is convenient because the laptop will be ready to use whenever you need it, this behavior can harm the laptop without you even realizing it.

Is shutting down really important?

Yes, as long as you're using a Windows laptop, it actually makes sense. There's more going on when you turn off your computer than when you just put it into Sleep mode or fold down the lid.

Based on what you're doing with your laptop, shutting it down can significantly increase system performance and longevity. It clears system memory, closes any applications running in the background or foreground, and shuts down the computer the way it was designed.

If you're just going to get a glass of water, you certainly don't need to turn off your laptop. But if you carry it as a backup device, the article strongly recommends that you turn it off.

Windows laptops handle Sleep mode differently than MacBooks, and the fan can actually continue to run for quite a long time after you put your PC into Sleep mode.

Running a fan in a backpack or laptop bag is not good for your laptop because it can overheat the device without you realizing it, leading to heat damage.

Benefits of regularly shutting down your PC

As you might have guessed, shutting down your PC from time to time has some benefits. Here are the two most important benefits.

Efficiency

Shutting down your PC means you'll almost certainly have better performance after restarting it.

This is a byproduct of shutting down the computer, cleaning up system memory, closing stuck background processes, and deleting anything in the background that could take up system resources.

This is also why shutting down and restarting your PC tends to resolve seemingly random problems with your PC.

There's a reason the first question tech support will ask is whether you've restarted your PC. Windows automatically clears a bunch of things when you shut down your laptop or PC, meaning the system has more resources to use the next time it restarts.

System lifespan

Turning off your Windows laptop every day can help it work longer.

Unfortunately, Windows Modern Standby is extremely unstable and often drains the battery, even when your PC is in Sleep mode. This means you are using unnecessary battery cycles. Over the years, these cycles build up and cause the battery to lose its ability to hold a charge.

So what about Sleep mode?

The Sleep feature on your Windows laptop isn't completely useless, but it's not intended as a substitute for shutting down your PC.

Put your PC in Sleep mode if you'll be using it again in a short time, but if you're done working for the day, it's better to turn the device off. You can even set the Windows sleep timer to turn off your computer after a certain amount of time.

If you just leave your laptop in Sleep or hibernation mode every time you finish using it, over time this will cause performance problems so severe that you will have to reset the system and start installing Windows. new because there is too much “junk” accumulated in the system and rebooting cannot remove it all.

If you're away from your device for a short period of time, even a few hours, it's perfectly fine to lower the lid or put your laptop in Sleep mode. However, if you have finished your work for the day or will be carrying your laptop in a bag or case, turn it off.

Your computer needs daily rest just like you.
