Adding a cover page frame on Word is an indispensable and important operation when users design report book covers, thesis covers, etc. How to create a cover frame on Word is different from creating a frame on Word, because the cover frame needs to be added. Different patterns and designs to increase professionalism as well as attract more viewers.
Depending on the type of document the user is designing, the user can choose the appropriate cover frame style, along with the pattern in the frame. Before creating a border, users need to create content for the cover page. The cover page can be created yourself, or use existing page styles. Note to usersto create a standard cover page frame, we need to format the printed page margins according to regulations. Or you can use the following basic dimensions:
- The top and bottom margins are 2 cm
- The left margin is 3cm
- The right margin is 1.5cm

1. How to create a cover frame on Word 2016, 2019, 2021
We create the complete cover page as shown below.
Step 1:
Click Layout tab then select Margins Click next Custom Margins…
Step 2:
The Page Setup dialog box appears to adjust the margins for the cover page. Users align according to the image below.
- Top, Bottom: 2 cm
- Left: 3 cm
- Right: 2 cm
The remaining parameters are left at default. Press OK to realign the cover page.
Step 3:
After completing the above, click Design tab select Page Borders.
Step 4:
Display the new interface and click on the item Page Border in the dialog box Borders and Shading. Part Style The user chooses the border style for the cover page. Color to choose the frame color for the cover page and select the width in the border at Width.
Remember to frame the cover on all 4 sides. Part Apply to select This section – First page only to apply this frame style to the first cover page only. Click on the button again Options.
Step 5:
In the new interface, users can customize and align the border with the content on the cover page. Part Mesure from select Text and uncheck all the options below so that the cover page is aligned to the edge of the printed page, and when the window is closed, the border frame is not lost. Users can look through the section Preview under.
Finally press OK to create a cover border.
Users will have a cover page border with a dashed frame style as shown below.
Step 6:
If the user wants Create a border with decorative motifsthen in interface Borders and Shading part Art There will be motifs to design for the Word cover page border.
We also adjust the width of the pattern and color for the border as above.
The result will be a cover page with a pattern as shown below.

2. How to create borders for Word 2007 cover pages
Step 1:
After creating the cover page, we proceed to align it according to standards. You click on it Page Layout > Margins > Custom Margins…
Step 2:
The Page Setup dialog box appears, enter the alignment parameters as follows:
- Top, Bottom: 2 cm
- Left: 3 cm
- Right: 2 cm
The remaining 2 parameters, Gutter and Gutter position, will be left by default. Press OK to save the settings for this margin.
Step 3:
After setting the standard cover page alignment, to create a border for the cover we will click Page Layout tab then select Page Border. In some other versions of Word, you can access Design and select Page Borders.
Step 4:
The Boaders and Sharing dialog box appears. Here, click Page Border tab then look down ART section to select the border for the book cover in the drop-down list.
Users choose any border pattern from the Art menu, select Width to increase or decrease the thickness of the border, and Color to adjust the color of the border. Then at section Apply to Click select This section – First page onlyto apply the border to only the first cover page.
You can preview the cover frame in the Preview section next to it. Click next Options section then switch to the new interface.
Step 5:
In section Mesure from select Text and uncheck all the options below so that the cover page is aligned close to the edge of the printed page, so that when the book is closed, the border will not be lost. Press OK to save
Return to the cover frame setting interface, Click OK below the interface to set the border for the cover.
We will get a cover frame as shown below.
If we want to insert a pattern for the cover border on Word, we also click on the Art section to select a pattern for the cover on Word.
